Review: Reaper Miniatures

Well looks like I was wrong. Instead of following the predictable route, I chose to tread the path less taken.

Reaper Miniatures is an American company working out of Louisville, TX, and specializes on pewter miniatures. With two games under their belts, and fifty bazillion different miniatures, they are most certainly a well established company. While I have not played Warlord or CAV, I have used, handled and assembled their miniatures. On the whole, I am impressed.

The biggest advantage to the Reaper line is that there is VARIETY! If you want it, odds are you can find it in a Reaper line. From fantasy to science fiction, they have it with a surprising level of detail. Whats even better is there is a large community who sell these miniatures pro-painted off ebay, if your looking for something flashy, type in "reaper (blah)" or "painted reaper (blah)" where 'blah' is whatever you want. Odds are you will find something!

A huge boost to these miniatures is their price. Reaper miniatures, compared to the Evil Empire cost almost nothing. The average blister costs around 5 bucks, depending on your vendor.

Much to the Evil Empire's dislike, many of these miniatures substitute their own, typically with superior results. When I started a Dark Eldar army, I decided to make all of my special characters Reaper mini's, when I sold the army, I kept the Reaper minis' and sold the standard ones.

things to point out (otherwise known as 'bad points'): They ONLY produce pewter models. This means don't make whole armies out of them unless you want to spend huge amounts of money on a forklift. Since there is only one type for each model, whole armies of these would look very similar and weigh a ton. I recommend using them for special characters or squad leaders. Make sure they have the right equipment though, because you don't get options out of the blister.

If you use these miniatures for representation in RPG's, more power to you. these miniatures really are your forte because they have just about everything you could want.

Final Verdict: Superb miniatures with excellent detail and are easy to assemble (usually coming in one or two bits). Low cost, low maintenance (rarely requires pinning unless you get the larger, more complex models), lots of room for customization and is not game specific (you can use them seamlessly in other game systems). Don't expect to find vehicle replacements in this miniatures line. I recommend using them as special characters in systems with poor miniature quality.


Another point, they produce pre-painted miniatures (something the Evil Empire has failed to pick up on) which gives people who hate painting the capacity to play in games. these miniatures rank on the level of "pro painting" but are certainly not award winners.

Hey folks, I am sure that a miniature review site interests everyone (suuure), however, i got into miniature gaming rather late (roughly age 22). One thing I quickly discovered is that I not only enjoyed these games, but the miniatures themselves. While many miniature companies actually don't have a game associated with them, they still produce amazingly detailed and attractive models. Many of these companies (most of which are small), get no credit. I will be reviewing miniature games as I try them. It is no surprise that the first ones i will discuss will be (of course) games workshop games, but surprisingly not their staple games.
